Train the trainer

ie how to train another mentor on how to give your training!

General steps for training new mentors:

NOTE: EACH OF THESE STEPS SHOULD BE PERFORMED AS MANY TIMES AS NECESSARY UNTIL THE NEW MENTOR FEELS COMFORTABLE MOVING ON

  1. New mentor participates in training as a trainee
    1. Note: this step can be skipped if the new mentor is already very familiar with the machine
  2. New mentor watches training
    1. Before starting, go over key timing points (e.g. how much design time, critical checkpoints to hit by a certain time)
    2. Take time to discuss things that the mentor will need to know as the students do the work
    3. Point out things that often go wrong and how to adapt or troubleshoot
  3. New mentor gives training while you supervise
    1. Interject when needed on safety material
    2. Understand that other people have different training styles and that’s ok!
    3. Remember to take attendance and feedback forms

Additional notes:

  • Make sure new mentor does libcal attendance with you, and is fully set up in libcal
  • If you do any prep before trainings, make sure to share with the new mentor what you typically do
  • Email robyneg@ each time you move on to the next step
