Metropolis Orientation

This guide helps mentors and instructors provide the in-person part of Metropolis Makerspace orientation

Step 1 — Introduce the Shop

  • Introduce yourself: name, pronouns, a little bit about yourself.
  • Metropolis is a makerspace, an experimental training facility and the home of MakerLodge. Our goal is to train you in a bunch of different ways and see what sticks the best. You can help us by coming in and getting trained, giving us feedback, and then making use of the open hours and your new making skills!
  • Talk about what makes this facility exciting for you
  • We have a hybrid leadership model, with staff and student mentors both able to run open hours, provide training, and guide the growth of the shop.
  • When are we open, how can you get engaged, and what do we offer?
    • Open hours–libcal Anyone who has been oriented can come in and work We are hoping to increase the open hours availability as our mentor presence increases We have evening and weekend hours!

Step 2 — Entry Hallway

  • Project in Progress Storage in Grey Cabinets. We will send cleanout emails once per semester. Label your stuff with email and end date
    • No storage of explosives, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders, pressurized chemical tanks, etc. If you want to store batteries, please check in with a mentor or shop staff for a battery box.
  • Cardboard Recyling

  • Lost & Found
  • 3D print Return

Step 3 — Monitor

  • Look at the monitors, point out mentor photos, project photos
    • During open hours mentors will be wearing aprons or other Project Manus swag so you can identify them
  • Price list – several raw materials are available in the shop but not free – pay with tech cash or credit card on the MIT Mobius Website
  • 5 Minute Shop Jobs – every time you come to the shop, ask a mentor for a 5 minute shop job. This helps everyone participate and get to know each other!

Step 4 — Kitchen, Social, and 3Dprint

  • Feel free to do homework, watch movies, put on music
  • The Kitchenette is for food – not shop processes.
  • Label food with email and date
  • 3D printers – explain MakerLodge Printers must be free when a MakerLodge Digital training runs
  • Stratasys has cost – talk to a mentor to pay on Mobius
  • Please only use ONE 3D printer per person

Step 5 — Sign-in and Safety

  • Safety Feedback Forms!!
  • Sign-in Stand – Sign in every time you come to the shop
  • Light Switch

Step 6 — Report Injuries and malfunctions

  • Report even small injuries and minor malfunctions to a mentor or staff. If you remember something after you leave, email or
  • In case of injury, take care of yourself first (or ask for help) an fill out an incident report.
    • Your protection! Even if something small happens, it could get infected and we want a paper trail that it happened here
    • To establish patterns. If the same thing keeps happening but no one reports it, we don’t know it’s happening. If we don’t know it’s happening, we can’t fix it!
  • If something isn’t quite working right, or breaks, report that too
    • There is no judgement! Just so we can fix it more quickly, and help establish patterns and areas to improve training.
  • All reporting is by the front door, to the left of the first aid kit!

Step 7 — MIT Standard Shop Safety

  • Go over the shop safety highlights on the wall vinyl. Encourage students to think for themselves, assessing potential risks and hazards and acting responsibly
  • In case of emergency call 100 from a landline or 617-253-1212 from a cell phone
  • Fitted clothing and closed toe shoes.
  • Long non-synthetic pants and canvas or leather shoes for hotwork.
  • Ok to take glasses off if no machines are running, you are responsible to put them on when anyone starts a machine.
  • No gloves at all on rotating machinery
  • No music in both ears – one is ok, or share your tunes on the stereo!
  • Use only equipment you’ve been trained on. We accept some training from other shops, class 1 and 2 machines have quick training available just-in-time, and mentors may be able to help you run short tasks on class 3 and 4 machines.

Step 8 — Tour the PPE wall

  • Safety glasses are on the wall
    • Rule: If there is any work being done in the space, you must be wearing safety glasses. If there is no work being done, you don’t have to wear them. That rule is subject to change as we get busier.
    • Regular glasses don’t count, but impact rated prescription safety glasses with side shields do.
    • Keep an eye out on each other–if you are the first person to start working, let everyone know so they can put on their safety glasses.
  • Hearing protection is on the wall. Hearing loss is cumulative, irreversible, and sneaks up on you. Hearing protection is required for some of our louder processes–vertical bandsaw, sometimes milling machine, or if the shop is just loud.
  • Nitrile gloves are on the wall. No gloves when working with spinning tools (that includes mill/lathe). Must glove up when working with Form 3s, chemicals, or adhesives. Gloves are cheap, change them often!!
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and look out for each other. Everyone has the right and responsibility to respectfully stop something unsafe from happening

Step 9 — Review Shop Culture & Safety

  • Look at the shop values wall vinyl, talk about a couple that are meaningful for you.
  • We are a community space. Every user is part of the shop and we take care of each other. Our team of mentors runs the facility, training, and open hours.

Step 10 — Shop Tour – Main Shop

  • Walk around the shop, naming and pointing out all the machines.
  • Social area and no PPE zone for 3D printers, laser cutters and sewing
  • Waterjet and Stratasys have operating costs
  • Point out the sinks, emergency eye wash, shower, and phone. Only the kitchenette sink is potable.
  • Point out the scrap bins – everything in the scrap bins is free, but please keep it neat and throw out unusable material
  • Point out computers in the tables–they are loaded with most of the software they may need to do their work/setup.

Step 11 — Spray Booth & Chemicals

  • Flammables Cabinet contains:
    • Hazardous waste – ask a mentor how to dispose proprerly
    • Shared materials
    • Member Materials
  • If it’s not on the Pre-approved chemical list, send SDS to metropolis-staff@ before bringing it into the shop
  • Label your stuff with email and date
  • Turn the booth on by waving your hand through the sensor. Wait 3 minutes until lights come on before working.

Step 12 — Shop Tour – Hotwork

  • Beware if the door to the welding shop is closed–arcs are probably being struck. Knock on the door and wait for confirmation before entering. The ventilation is loud, so if you don’t get confirmation, enter while looking at the floor/away and shielding your eyes.Point out the phone and exit. The back door is not an exit unless its open.
  • Point out light switch
  • Explain Ventilation Switch – vents take about 3 minutes to turn on
  • MIT Policy is do not fight fires. Fire extinguisher on wall for emergency evacuation use

Step 10 — Metropolis Specific

  • Please notify mentors or staff of any broken tools. You will not get in trouble! We need to know that things are broken in order to fix them, but also to know how things are breaking in order to improve our trainings.
  • We accept many trainings from other shops, but at the moment everything other than makerlodge/Metropolis is accepted on a training-by-training basis.
  • Please check in with a mentor or staff member if you are bringing training from another shop. We may want to have a 5 minute machine orientation, do just-in-time training, or want to have you attend an individual training session.
  • Cleanliness is super important! We follow both the campsite rule and the shop use rule: leave everything cleaner than when you found it, and make sure the person using the tool and space after you does not have to clean before they get to work.
  • Your buy-in: we are a community space! If the whole community contributes, then the mentors and staff can spend more time keeping the shop open, improving the shop, and improving our trainings. To that end, we ask that every time you come to the shop to work you contribute with a five minute shop job. Help us keep the shop running smoothly!

Step 11 — Orientation sign in

  • Open and navigate to admin / credentials
  • Have students sign in with their MIT email addresses
  • Issue the following credentials
    • General Shop Safety
    • Metropolis Specific Safety
    • The Deep Specific Safety
  • Tick the checkbox to “Email EHS”
