Step 1: Getting Started

  • Download Pdf provided and open with illustrator.
  • Gather all necessary materials.

Step 2: Cutting File

  • Laser cut the file. (Estimated 15 minutes total)
  • You will need to restrict the ‘print range’ to the current page you would like to print.
    • This means you will need to set-up the print 5 times for all 5 pages of the file.
  • Pages 1-2 must be cut on a rigid material such as plywood or acrylic. (Must be 1/8″ in thickness).
  • Pages 3-5 can lasercut on paper or another light material.
  • Use all proper protocols for running a laser cutter.
  • Don’t forget to focus the laser cutter when switching materials.

Step 3: Your Pieces

Collect all your pieces, they should be as follows:

  • 4 x Spiral Stems
  • 8 x Dowels
  • 16 x Small Leafs
  • 8 x Large vertical leafs (Vertical Holes)
  • 8 x Large horizontal leafs

Step 4: Prepare Dowels

  • There are 8 total dowel halves that must be paired to make .25″ x .25″ inch dowels.
  • Glue two halves together on their flat sides to make one dowel. (4 dowels total).
  • Use Hot Glue, Wood Glue, or Super Glue

Step 5: Understanding the Stems

  • There are 4 spiral stems. It is important to note the differences between each spiral.
    • 1 x Large spiral
    • 2 x Small spirals
    • 1 x Small offset spiral
  • The offset small spiral is notably different by looking at the location of the spokes in relation to the 4 square holes on the spiral.

Step 6: Stems and Leaf Assembly

  • There are 4 spiral stems. It is important to note the differences between each spiral.
    • 1 x Large spiral
    • 2 x Small spirals
    • 1 x Small offset spiral
  • The offset small spiral is notably different by looking at the location of the spokes in relation to the 4 square holes on the spiral.

Step 7: Final Parts

  • Once you have installed all leaves on all 4 spirals you are ready to put your lamp together. Your parts should now be:
  • 4 x Complete spirals with leaves
  • 4 x Dowels

Step 8: Lamp Assembly

  • To assemble your lamp, insert your dowels into each of the holes on the largest (horizontal leaf) spiral.
  • The direction of the spiral does not matter, intended for the spokes to point counterclockwise.
  • Slide the dowels in far enough so that 1/4 of their length is sticking out from the bottom.
  • Next, align a small horizontal leaf spiral under your large spiral so that all 4 holes match the dowels.
  • On top of the large spiral, align the small vertical spiral and slide it down the dowels.
  • Align the last horizontal leaf spiral on top of the vertical leaf spiral and slide down onto the dowels.
  • The spacing or ‘density’ of the spiral is custom. The dowels can be cut if you prefer a more compact lamp.

Step 9: Finishing Touches + Light

  • To seal the lamp and prevent spirals from sliding out, add glue to the ends of the dowels.
  • To install a small light fixture, slide the bulb and socket into the center hole of your lamp.
  • Now, you can use hot glue around the entire socket to secure it in place at your desired height.
  • Use plenty of glue to secure your light bulb and socket.

Step 10: Notes

  • Your lamp is now complete, but here are some things to keep in mind.
  • Spiral arms are delicate so don’t set the lamp down horizontally or apply much force to the arms in general.
  • If not enough glue is used to secure the light fixture, it can slide out and drop the lamp.
